BASILICATA
AND CALABRIA
Greeks, Byzantines and Basilian monks shaped the history
here in Calabria. These regions which were part of Magna Graecia
are along with Sicily and Puglia.
An important center was ancient Metaponto in Basilicata as well
as Crotone and Locri Epizefiri in Calabria. A beautiful reminder
of Byzantine rule is the Cattolica at Stilo. Matera is the place
where the Basilian monks took refuge in cave.
Many
of the historic remains are Norman and centuries of rule by Naple
led to the marginalization of Basilicata and Calabria. Today both
regions are in historic centers. The vast coastline boasts magnificent
sandy beaches, while the intrior features the rugged Aspromonte
and Sila mountain ranges.
We don't have any excursions to Basilicata and
Calabria. |
